No.27th – Notes of Home is a conceptual perfume inspired by my mother’s favorite Ume sauce. Modeled after its bottle shape, the scent comes in two versions—fresh green for day, and elegant purple for night. I created a 3D model and animation placing the perfume inside a fridge, blending memory, scent, and the playful absurdity of misplaced objects.

Summary

No.27th Notes of Home is a conceptual perfume inspired by memory, absurdity, and the quiet intimacy of everyday objects. As part of my fictional fragrance line No. Notes of Home, this edition reimagines a familiar item from my childhood: a Japanese Ume (plum) sauce bottle that always lived in our fridge. My mom loved its sharp, salty-sour taste, and for as long as I can remember, its distinct silhouette and presence were constants in our kitchen.

After moving away from home, I found myself missing not just the flavor, but the comforting sight of that bottle in the fridge. This project began as I tried to transform a condiment into a container of scent, and recontextualize domestic memory through design.

The perfume bottle borrows the playful, slightly awkward shape of the original Ume sauce container, now repurposed as an elegant fragrance vessel. It comes in two versions: Ume-Asa, in a translucent light green, is a crisp, fresh scent for daytime, evoking citrus, linen, and summer air. Its counterpart, Ume-Yoru, in a deep plum purple, offers a richer, sweeter scent with floral notes and softness: elegant, a little mysterious, and more traditionally feminine. Both share Ume and palm as base notes.

To further explore the surreal juxtaposition of objects and place, I created a short 3D animation featuring a fridge door opening, revealing the perfume nestled among jars and bottles. The animation highlights the absurd delight of finding something that doesn’t belong there, and yet somehow, does. I also modeled the perfume bottle in 3D to develop its form, texture, and presentation.

No.27th Notes of Home invites viewers to reflect on scent as a carrier of memory, and on how the most mundane objects can hold deep emotional resonance when viewed through a different lens.
